The British firm Zaha Hadid Architects is building 100 hydrogen refueling stations in Italian terminals for energy company NatPower as “the world’s first green hydrogenation infrastructure.”
Designed by ZHA for use by recreational boats, the filling station will provide green hydrogen – a type of hydrogen produced using renewable energy.
The first charging stations will be installed this summer, and 100 charging stations are planned to be built in 25 marinas and ports in Italy by 2030, with a €100 million investment led by NatPower H, a company of energy company NatPower.
The charging stations are part of an effort to encourage the adoption of green hydrogen-powered boats for short journeys. Hydrogen can be used to generate electricity in fuel cells, emitting only water vapor and warm air—unlike polluting internal combustion engines.
“NatPower H aims to install the infrastructure for the supply of green hydrogen, create a network of sustainable energy centers in all major Italian terminals and create ideal conditions to promote the continued development and use of hydrogen-powered ships,” the studio said.
According to the studio, the 100 sites will eliminate approximately 45,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions from recreational boats in the region each year.
Each station will be divided into eight curved bays, made from 3D-printed concrete blocks, with a layered structure designed to echo the geometries found in marine life.
According to the studio, the 50-square-meter stations will be fully recyclable and built from dry-assembled sections to minimize construction waste.
Filippo Innocenti, director at Zaha Hadid Architects, said: “ZHA’s hydrogen refueling station is constructed from low-carbon concrete, with its structural strength generated through geometry rather than increased use of material.”
“The stations combine the latest innovations in construction technology with historical engineering developed by the Romans across the Mediterranean more than 2,000 years ago, using advanced circular building techniques and embodying NatPower H’s commitment to an ecologically responsible future.”
The design follows ZHA Computing and Design Research Group’s (ZHA Code) research into masonry structures, 3D printed concrete and sustainable digital concrete structures, and was developed in conjunction with Block Research Group and Incremental3D.
Other projects exploring hydrogenation technology include a mirror-polished stainless steel hydrogenation station designed by French designer Philippe Starck to give it a futuristic feel.
