During a panel discussion at the ‘Mangaluru Technovanza 3.0’ organized by the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM), representatives from the gaming industry said educational institutions in the region should focus on providing training in specific areas to students in the region.
K Rajesh Rao, founder of Dhruva Interactive and India Game Developers Conference (IGDC), highlighted the potential of the industry at a conference on ‘Gaming Domain and Gaming Policy: Creating Advantages for the Emerging Mangaluru Cluster’ in Mangaluru on Tuesday , he said institutions in the region educate many students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.
He said that the game industry needs programmers, designers, etc., so there is a need for field-specific training in game design and programming. He said educational institutions in the region should look into the issue and offer some courses to students.
He emphasized the need for capacity building in the Mangaluru cluster and said the gaming industry should collaborate with regional educational institutions.
Rajesh Rao said that there is a shortage of human resources in the gaming industry and a well-designed course will help 100% of the students find employment.
Shylaja Rao, general partner at Ventana Ventures, a gaming-focused venture capital firm, said talent is the main challenge facing the industry and said there was a need to raise awareness of the opportunities in the gaming industry.
Joyride Games product director Ganesh Hande said gaming startups in the Mangaluru Cluster can focus on niche skill areas in the gaming space and work for some big companies.
Sudhir Kamath, chief operating officer of Nazara Technologies Ltd, who participated in the panel discussion through virtual mode, said mentorship and talent are also crucial for the development of the gaming industry in the Mangaluru cluster.
Rohith Bhat, founder and CEO of 99Games and chief industry anchor of KDME Mangaluru Cluster, who moderated the meeting, said that many gaming startups participating in national-level gaming events are from tier-II and tier-III centres.
