Workplace injuries are likely to spike in the new year as employees return to work and new hires are made.
Healthy Work Australia this week made recommendations on the principles of “work intensification” that could form early intervention strategies to help minimize workplace injuries in agricultural businesses.
Job hardening is a phrase used in many industries that utilize manual labor to describe the process by which workers adapt to the physical demands of their roles.
When the job hardening process is managed properly, employees will become more adaptable to their work environment.
The purpose of job intensification is to gradually increase the physical fitness and load tolerance of workers to meet the requirements of their tasks. This will help offset the stress on the worker’s soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments) from occupational overuse injuries. A job intensification plan should be developed in collaboration with the on-site injury management provider, if one is available.
SafeWork Australia said: “As most work-related musculoskeletal illnesses are caused by long-term exposure, prevention activities aimed at eliminating acute injuries should also reduce the overall size and severity of these illnesses in a timely manner.”
Who should work harden?
New hires: Whether new to the industry or in a similar position, new hires often benefit from job enhancement programs specific to their role.
Employees starting new roles within the company: Each role within the company will have its own specific task requirements, so employees are more likely to experience “job hardening pain” after transitioning to a new role.
Workers returning from extended leave or non-work-related injury/illness: The longer workers are off (especially when physical activity is restricted), the worse their physical condition becomes. Job intensification programs can help them return to their normal roles quickly.

How is a work hardening plan developed?
Work enhancement programs should take into account the physical demands of each job, the worker’s current physical abilities, and should be carefully developed in collaboration with the on-site injury management provider. Work hardening programs will typically take into account type of work, rotations and breaks, and will include appropriate warm-up recommendations and manual handling training.
