For more than two decades, Brostrom has held a variety of positions in winery management, importing, distribution, retail and nonprofit wine education. She brings a unique international perspective to her role. She has authored three books on wine, including “The Wine Business: Encyclopedia”.
“We are delighted to welcome Geralyn Brostrom as the inaugural professor of wine in our Vidal-Douard wine studies program,” said Michael Cheng, dean of the Chaplin School . “With her extensive knowledge and experience in wine studies, Brostrom will enhance the educational journey and achievement of our students and contribute to the school’s overall success.”
Chip Cassidy founded the top 8 hospitality school’s wine program in the 1970s and created the Florida Extravaganza, a one-day on-campus wine and food pairing event.This event has grown to 105+ events Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival Presented by Capital One (SOBEWFF®)It is one of the world’s most famous wine and food festivals, organized in partnership with Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, the world’s preeminent alcoholic beverage distributor. More than 1,500 students help operate SOBEWFF®, of which the school is a beneficiary. The school is now named after the Chaplin family who helped found South Glazer School.
Founded by Florida International University alumni Tina Vidal-Duart and Carlos Duart Vidal-Dual Wine Research Project December continues the school and Cassidy’s legacy. It is the only wine studies program in the country named by a Hispanic family and woman. The gift includes support for the Chip Cassidy Distinguished Professor of Wine Studies and directly benefits students pursuing undergraduate degrees in beverage or spirits management.
“I am honored to be named the Chip Cassidy Distinguished Professor of Wine Studies at Florida International University and to have the opportunity to support Chip’s legacy,” said Brostrom. “I am delighted to be part of FIU’s talented team of wine and beverage professionals who are passionate about developing the next generation of hospitality leaders. We look forward to working together to chart the future path for FIU while continuing to push the boundaries of knowledge and innovation in the field ,” she added.
Prior to joining Florida International University, Brostrom made significant contributions to wine business education at Sonoma State University and the Culinary Institute of America. Her industry consulting work includes work with Vinexpo America, various wine importers and regional wine councils. She is also co-founder of the Italian Wine Center, a wine education and certification organization.
Brostrom holds a BA in Management, an MBA in Marketing, and a PhD in Business Administration from Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. A dual citizen of the United States and the Republic of Italy, she has explored more than 20 wine regions around the world and lived in the heart of California’s Napa Valley for nearly a decade.
The Vidal-Duart Wine Research Project will be presented at SOBEWFF® in February. Additional community activities and the first students under the program’s new name are scheduled to begin in spring 2024.
