The College of Human Resource Development (AHRD) recently elected Claretha Hughes, professor of human resource development in the School of Education and Health Professions, to its Board of Trustees.
Hughes’ three-year term will officially begin on February 24 following the organization’s meeting in Arlington, Virginia.
The AHRD Board Leadership Academy is committed to upholding the vision of leading human resources development through research. Some of the key responsibilities of the Board include setting the strategic direction of AHRD, actively advancing the work of the organization and ensuring the financial stewardship of the College.
Hughes said being elected to the board of directors by AHRD’s national and international members is recognition of the work she has done throughout her career and the leadership she has provided to the college.
“This is the culmination of my 20 years as a human resource development scholar committed to personal standards of excellence,” Hughes said. “I feel that as a scholar and practitioner who has worked in multinational organizations and in academia, I have a strong appreciation for our The field has many facets of knowledge. I hope to leave a legacy of academic excellence and leadership.”
The position as board member will be a new chapter in Hughes’ work with AHRD, an organization she has been involved with since 2004. Hughes also served as Deputy Program Chair for AHRD Proceedings from 2005 to 2008.
Now, as a board member, she said she looks forward to applying her expertise and research and hopes to implement new programs and initiatives designed to help HRD students at all levels.
“My vision is to help build a student organization focused on research and scholarly inquiry for HRD students at all levels,” Hughes said. “I want to establish an annual HRD student conference where students at all levels can hone their Practice their research skills.”
She added: “The importance of helping students develop research ethics, critical thinking, and depth and breadth of knowledge allows our students to be catalysts for change in all areas of HRD.”
Hughes joined the Faculty of Education and Health Professions in 2004 and spent 20 years at the University of Alberta and 33 years working or consulting in corporate America.
She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings, and has written or edited 16 books.She has edited three special issue journals, the most recent of which is international career development. Hughes also serves as a book proposal reviewer for SAGE, Emerald, IGI Global, Palgrave Macmillan, and CyberTech Publishing. She is a Langevin Certified Master Trainer, a Harvard Management Development Fellow and a minority Executive Education Scholar at the Darden School.
Her research on valuing people and technology in the workplace continues to influence the field of human resource development.
