Text description provided by the architect. At a time when Switzerland is divided between Dichtelust and Dichtestress*, HHF works to enhance forgotten spaces in the heart of Basel’s city neighborhoods.
HHF transformed an abandoned courtyard with firewalls and parking spaces into 15 apartments surrounded by lush gardens. By combining the “surplus” square meters of three existing plots, the scheme demonstrates the potential for densification by reclaiming seemingly unusable urban space. This nine-year plan shows that it is possible to increase density in the center of Basel if we come together around the same table.
Owners, residents, neighbors and architects have moved the boundary lines of three parcels to make the center of the block habitable. From that point on, the challenges of the site became the specificities of the project: the geometry of the plot, the proximity to the surrounding walls, the relationship with the neighbors and the slope… were both the problem and the solution of the project.
Cross-shaped structures and building volumes with expansions and setbacks are the solution for ample sunlight, privacy and exterior space. This also creates a series of private and semi-public courtyards that provide different intimate moments while also connecting the two topographical levels of the site.
This particular topography also has an impact on access: the ground floor of Davidsbodenstrasse provides access to a semi-underground car park, while the ground floor of Landskronstrasse allows pedestrians to enter the site through an existing portico.
The white spruce facade surrounds a central core with its own underground parking, housing 15 unique apartments arranged radially around the core.Various types of rooms ranging from 2.5 to 5.5 rooms (some of which are duplex solutions) and living areas ranging from 52 to 151 m2.

Its surroundings are framed by plants and vines climbing up the surrounding firewall of the adjacent garage, as well as vertical balcony poles that emphasize the facade while creating a cloud around the exposed building. The balcony level itself emphasizes the buffer zone between private and public – undefined soft spaces that will be developed over time by individual owners.
