Text description provided by the architect. Public Learning Center. Learning and community. The new school on the island of Amager in Copenhagen is an open and welcoming house where every inch of the building offers learning space. A central feature of the school is the leisure area, which we have integrated into the urban fabric by integrating the school building with the surrounding area. This area has multiple functions that invite passers-by to interact with the school. Facing the street, we designed the building as a community building, with its large staircase serving as both a seating platform and a fitness space.
“The interior design of the school is characterized by fluidity and unusual visual effects. The scheme demonstrates a deep understanding of new ways of thinking and learning spaces. This is particularly evident on the ground floor where the play area and open auditorium are located.” According to the judges of the winning project feedback, describing how movement possibilities and flexibility can be integrated into the school’s architecture.
An urban garden. The exterior staircase creates a seamless transition between the urban landscape and the school building. As local users climb the stairs, an outdoor playscape unfolds above the city’s noise and traffic. Here, the local community can lounge under full-size trees while children play on the play structures and climbing wall. When it’s time to go back, locals can take the stairs or use the slide, which snakes back to street level.
Modern community building. As well as being a school designed to provide an ideal learning environment, the school also doubles as an after-school activity center for adults and children. Therefore, on the first floor of the school, there is easy access to the gymnasium, studios, makerspace and auditorium. Here we designed the building in a way that provides a vibrant social environment for events such as lectures, crafts, concerts and public meetings.
Uniform staircase. To let in daylight, we created an internal atrium with skylights and a grand staircase for sitting. Stairs open up other floors of the school to students. As levels rise, students become more isolated from the outside world. By creating this vertical connection, we organize the building so that the daily life of the youngest students is removed from the bustling streets, thus ensuring a safe learning environment.
