Chelsea are confident of hiring Brighton & Hove Albion head of recruitment Sam Jewell 16 months after appointing predecessor Paul Winstanley.
Brighton are aware of Chelsea’s offer and will allow Jewell to decide whether to move to the Stamford Bridge club. They want to keep Jewell but are aware of the appeal of a potentially lucrative offer and, while a deal has yet to be agreed, it is understood recruitment chiefs are leaning towards accepting Chelsea’s offer.
Winstanley becomes one of Chelsea’s sporting directors in November 2022, leading to Jewell taking up the position at Brighton on an interim basis.
Jewell was appointed permanently as head of recruitment in February 2023 but could follow his predecessor to west London a year later.
Should Jewell move, he would become another Brighton asset heading to Chelsea. Chelsea have regularly recruited staff and players from the south coast club since a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over the club in May 2022.
In addition to Winstanley, Chelsea also appointed Graham Potter in September 2022, who also brought four members of the backroom staff with him. Kyle McCauley was also poached and added to the recruiting department.
On the pitch, Chelsea have signed three players from Brighton in the past four transfer windows. Marc Cucurella will join in the summer of 2022 for an initial fee of £56 million, Robert Sanchez will have a transfer fee of approximately £25 million, and Moises Caicedo ) joined a year later for £115m.
Jewell, the son of former Wigan Athletic manager Paulo, was involved in the Ecuador international’s initial move to Brighton, as well as Alexis McAllister’s arrival from Argentina’s youth ranks in 2019 process.
Jewell was offered the role of technical director at Rangers last October but turned it down to continue working at the Amex Stadium.
