The pieces are starting to come together for Global Meetings Industry Day 2024. On Thursday, April 11, the business events industry will come together virtually and in-person to network and celebrate the importance and economic impact of meetings, conferences, incentives and exhibitions.
This year will be GMID’s eighth year, but its origins go back much further. It began as Canada’s National Meetings Industry Day in the mid-1990s, expanded to North America Meetings Industry Day in 2015, and was relaunched a year later as Global Meetings Industry Day under the Meetings Mean Business campaign.
Starting with last year’s GMID, Meetings Mean Business (now part of US Travel) tracked 70 GMID events in 35 countries and 45 million GMID impressions on LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter (now X) and Facebook. (See the recap deck here.)
This year, the day will again feature Meeting Professionals International’s 12-hour virtual livestream from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central Time, bringing together event professionals from time zones around the world. In 2023, the event hosted more than 40 educational sessions on topics such as sustainability, event material strategy, incentive travel research, and anti-human trafficking education, as well as special events such as the announcement of the 2023 RISE Awards finalists. Registration is now open for MPI’s virtual event. It is free, but organizers ask for a voluntary donation of $10.
The Capital City Chapter of the Professional Meeting Management Association is another organization responsible for GMID planning. Registration is now open for the in-person event at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., which will include keynotes on the state of Congress and the 2024 elections, as well as panel discussions on workforce, labor and employment issues.
