Marvel Architects’ ACACIA resilient housing prototype is designed to meet the fundamental need for dignified, permanent, safe and low-cost housing.
The DNA of traditional affordable single-family homes is dissected and reimagined into sustainable and resilient homes made from renewable resources and infrastructure that can maintain living conditions during extended periods off the grid.
ACACIA is the recipient of the 2023 American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Center for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies.
Marvel uses passive design strategies to provide natural light, cross ventilation, heat extraction and rain gardens.
The design considers the use of locally manufactured structural systems, available materials, and hurricane- and seismic-resistant components.
In terms of earthquakes, the project’s insulated concrete panel system has proven to be equally or more effective than traditional concrete block construction due to its relative lightweight and integrated reinforcement.
The modularity, internal distribution and configuration of this design provide adaptability to different sites and required areas.
Additionally, the design incorporates community and cultural elements. Balconies and internal courtyards were included as they formed part of the cultural development and community interaction of Boricus.
