Wood alone is not the answer. UNStudio calculates minimum carbon footprint for new Kyklos building in Luxembourg…and the results are mixed
Recently, Atenor, Arhs Group and Agora Luxembourg announced UNStudio and local partner HYP Architects as the winners of the Kyklos architectural design competition in Belval.
Belval is a redevelopment project that successfully transformed an old industrial area in Luxembourg into an urban center that now houses a university and technology centre, residential and office spaces, in addition to hotels and retail stores. The Kyklos Building will be the final building that will shape the Central Square District.
From the outset, the design team was determined to propose a building with the smallest possible carbon footprint.
Calculate carbon
As we now have the knowledge and capability to design operational net zero buildings, and in order to align our practice with the Paris Agreement and European taxonomies, UNStudio is currently focusing on developing better designs for low carbon buildings.
Although the focus in recent years when designing new buildings has been on operational carbon emissions, in fact, over the first 40 years or so, only 10% of a building’s carbon footprint was determined by its operational use. 90% is determined by the materials used. So while operational carbon remains an important issue, significant effort has been made to consider the entire (whole life cycle) carbon footprint in the design of the Kyklos building.
Develop the right tools
UNStudio is currently developing a full-fledged sustainable design framework that, along with other applications, will give designers full control over the carbon impact embodied in their designs. Part of this suite of tools, the Carbon Generator enables designers to delve into multiple options to reduce the carbon footprint of their projects.
For the Kyklos building proposal, early prototypes using Carbon Builder enabled the team to make the right decisions early in the conceptual design process. By assessing embodied carbon, the building design concept’s carbon footprint can be reduced by approximately 80% compared to traditional office buildings in Luxembourg.
Choose the best materials
The possibility to use 100% recycled content steel and use best practice concrete mixes significantly improves the carbon performance of the project. For functional use requirements, we chose a steel-concrete hybrid structure instead of other construction methods. It was determined that this hybrid solution provided better carbon performance in the long term. Early best-case roadmaps show that it is ultimately possible to achieve 115 kg CO2e/m2, compared with 580 kgCO2e/m2 for a typical office building in Luxembourg.
The Kyklos building is expected to achieve BREEAM Outstanding certification and WELL Platinum certification.

Kyklos (Greek for “circle”) is the final building in the large Belval development in Luxembourg. Designed to be the centerpiece of the Agora masterplan, the building is strategically located at the heart of the development, adjacent to the “Place des Bassins”.
Basin Plaza’s iconic design connects two basins in a unique “infinite loop” – remnants of the former steelworks site where the area was developed. This loop symbolizes the union of industrial sites and their regeneration as urban spaces. Due to its proximity to the square, the building is conceived as the third ring in the equation: a sustainable connection representing the future of urban development.
Urban integration and a holistic sustainable approach were the two main drivers for the design of all elements of the building, from functional organization to construction techniques and materiality.
From the outset of the design process, our aim was to highlight the unique elements of the site and create a building whose form could clearly and uniquely relate to these features. The design takes into account the master plan, main walkways and the existing main square to create a building that is inspired by and complements its surroundings. The result is a combination of the circular geometry of the square and the orthogonal geometry of the surrounding buildings.
The Kyklos building has a total above-ground area of 7,600 square meters and a basement area of 2,250 square meters, providing eight levels of office space above the mixed-use lower level. Several strategies were incorporated into the design to ensure a high level of transparency and daylight. One corner of the building is set back on the lower floors to create an overhang, further preventing overheating.
The lobby is designed as a unified space containing the main reception and commercial functions, with direct access from the interior and exterior. From here, a large circular staircase creates a visual connection with the Basin Square outside while encouraging the building’s users to use the stairs rather than the elevator.
The Kyklos Tower’s floor slabs branch out from a circular core and are suspended by steel cables. This eliminates the need for load-bearing columns as much as possible and frees up the floor for a variety of possible interior layouts. The design of the building also ensures flexibility for possible future changes in use.
