NVB Architects have recently completed an ambitious project at Haberdashers’ Boys’ School in Elstree, Hertfordshire, introducing a new academic center and drama facilities that reconcile contemporary learning with heritage conservation. The Bath-based company won the project through a competitive design competition, showcasing their innovative approach against established competitors.
Design concept and execution
The new 5,000sqm development has been designed to create a 21st century teaching environment that respects and complements the school’s Grade II* listed houses and parkland. The result is a visually striking yet seamlessly integrated academic center and drama studio that forms a cohesive corner of the existing quadrangle and is surrounded by a carefully landscaped courtyard.
Innovative learning space
The mixed-use development includes 46 modern classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology, natural lighting and efficient ventilation systems, as well as new offices and drama studios. The design team’s approach was heavily influenced by research into how natural materials and abundant daylight can create calm and productive learning environments. Classrooms and social spaces both indoors and outdoors are carefully planned to encourage inclusivity and connection between students and staff. In addition, the drama facility introduces a multi-functional, double-story teaching and performance space, further enriching the school’s cultural and educational content.
Collaborative efforts and sustainable impact
The success of the scheme is due to close collaboration between NVB architects, school leaders and the wider school community, including the insights of staff engaged in postgraduate research into learning environments.
