Adam and Ryan Goldstone, founders and brothers of sneaker brand Athletic Propulsion Lab, turned to London-based architecture firm Al-Jawad Pike for help with a brief for their New York outpost and flagship store: simple and rigorous. Located on one of Soho’s prime retail blocks, the newly built boutique lives up to expectations with its soaring rounded ceilings and columns visible through huge windows facing the street.
Better known as APL, the brand has made waves in the footwear world with its performance-enhancing sneakers that help wearers jump higher. They were so good that they were banned from the NBA. The architects drew on APL’s roots to design the store’s layout. The 3,800-square-foot space embodies two of the brand’s values: performance, visually expressed through curved, artisan-plastered walls on the amphitheater-like main floor; and basketball, whose symbol is the stadium A large bench curves around a pillar in the fitting room.
