A new web application launched on Friday shows 3D models of buildings in Brno, accurate to 20 centimeters, including precise modeling of roofs and chimneys. The model is useful for architects, designers and urban experts, but is also available to the public.
The 3D model was created in four stages and took less than five years. Roofs and other finer details are constructed to Level 2 of Detail (LOD2).
“With the launch of the Brno 3D model, the city is becoming a leader in digital urban planning,” said Tomáš Aberl, Brno City Councilor for Information Technology. “This complex model contains more than 107,000 buildings and detailed The topographic data provides architects and planners with an important tool for planning new construction and allows the public to better understand planned changes in the urban environment.”
The 3D model can be viewed on the web application here. The app also includes trees in Green Passport, all displayed on a 2019 digital terrain model. “The Office of the City Architect created the entire application using city data,” said Brno Mayor Markéta Vaňková. “Another advantage of our 3D model is that users have access to special features such as day and season shadow simulation, distance and height measurement, visibility simulation of selected points, pop-up windows with more detailed information about the building (height ), roof type, etc.), which will facilitate project preparation.”

The information is also accessible as open data at data.brno.cz and can be downloaded in a format suitable for use in GIS or CAD systems. The new Wavefront object (.obj) file format allows models to be displayed in graphics programs such as Blender.
Complex models of cities can be used in many ways. Planners and architects already frequently use data from previous phases when designing and visualizing new buildings. The model will help city staff assess the suitability of new developments (such as the visibility of landmarks and the consistency of new buildings with the surrounding area) as well as plan for further growth in the city.
