KUALA LUMPUR (March 18): Employers can now use up to 50% of their levy balance towards the Industrial Training Scheme (ITS), the Ministry of Human Resources has announced.
In addition, Minister of Human Resources Shen Zhiqiang said that the maximum monthly internship allowance that each intern can apply for under the ITS program has also been removed.
ITS is a scheme under the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) where employers receive financial assistance if they sponsor students from universities, colleges or training institutes for practical training at their premises.
Previously, financial assistance was limited to 20% of the employer’s total levy upon first application in a given year.
“Employers can now use up to 50% of the levy balance to pay for internship programs in their respective companies.
“We hope more companies will use their levy as we see industrial training is an important part of the skills training programme,” Sim said at the launch of the Small and Medium Enterprises Industrial Training Matching Grant Scheme (LiKES) on Monday.
In addition, Sim said a national internship policy is being developed on an ongoing basis to serve as guidelines for employers to hire interns.
He said TalentCorp Malaysia (TalentCorp), as the ministry’s strategic think tank, will work with industry and academia to develop guidelines for employers to prioritize the upskilling and well-being of interns.
Sim added: “These efforts will be reflected in the upcoming national human resources policy to enable employers to manage their internship programs responsibly.”
