Ohio University held its third University Update meeting Thursday morning to provide the public with news about some of the initiatives underway by Ohio University President Lori Stewart-Gonzalez and university leadership.
Gonzalez began the meeting with an update on the university’s search for a vice president for research and creative activities and a provost. Gonzalez said the search committee for promotion to vice chancellor is expected to be announced on Monday and then introduce the university promotion team as the first speakers.
Major Alston, senior vice president for university engagement, began his presentation by describing advancements in four functional areas: development, foundations, alumni and service. He also discussed strategic priorities for university engagement and building and maximizing philanthropic support.
“I think it’s critical for us to drive financial stability and operational excellence through broader voter participation,” Alston said.
The second speaker was Mary Elizabeth Myers, Interim Vice President of Human Resources.
Myers emphasized that the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Health Navigator are resources and services provided by Human Resources that are underutilized by university employees.
EAP is offered through IMPACT Solutions and is available to OU employees, spouses, dependents, family members, parents and parents-in-law. EAPs provide counseling services and assistance with child care, elder care, pet care, financial and legal matters, educational needs and daily living.
Myers also announced that starting this summer, the west wing of Grosvenor Hall will house the human resources department.
Athletic Director Julie Comer discussed students who are not playing sports but are involved in and contribute to the athletic department. She said more than 200 students are responsible for scheduling football game days each season. She highlighted the athletic department’s partnership with the Scripps School of Communication as one of the department’s unique opportunities to provide students with professional experience.
Robin Oliver, vice president for communications and marketing at the university, shared a draft of the university’s new mission statement and vision.
“Our mission: Open the doors of higher education to make learning accessible to all who aspire to solve humanity’s most pressing challenges, connecting them to experience and discovery, helping them think critically, care deeply, lead boldly, and ultimately succeed. service,” Oliver said.
The new vision statement is “to provide the best value college education in Ohio and to become one of the best value public universities in the nation,” Oliver said.
The new mission and vision statement will be finalized at a board meeting in June.
