Veteran executive Matt Sommer has been named chief technology officer of Dallas-based Imaginuity, a fully integrated traditional and digital marketing agency.
Imaginuity said Sommer has spent 25 years managing and growing many key aspects of the organization, including driving innovation, pioneering and communicating product vision, and leveraging data and analytics.
“As our original chief technology expert, I was looking for an executive with both the vision and experience to navigate this moment,” CEO Taylor Calise said in a statement. “Artificial intelligence is getting so much attention and Matt is studying and understanding it while others are still panicking about Y2K.”
Calise believes that marketing technology is at a “historic inflection point” and that the new chief technology expert is “uniquely prepared to not only help us meet this inflection point, but to accelerate it further.”
Most recently, Sommer was the owner of Emergent Systems, a consulting firm that helps develop and implement application-generated artificial intelligence solutions with a focus on data transformation.
Previously, Sommer was CEO and co-founder of MarketChorus, a platform that uses machine learning and natural language processing to understand people based on the content they consume.
For the real estate market, Imaginuity said he created the first ad tech tool designed to use artificial intelligence to instantly identify events, activities and attractions that match potential tenants’ interests, driving direct, high-affinity traffic to owners’ properties.
Leveraging technology to “drive business forward”
Sommer said in a statement that Imaginuity “has the right talent and technology to effectively grow and find new ways to get more value from its data and technology platform.” He believes that if technology plays a role in marketing Effect, “You shouldn’t even know it exists.”
The newly appointed chief technologist said that while other agencies are “scraping to catch up with tools like analytics and artificial intelligence,” Imaginuity has understood the science and “started to create value by applying it smartly.” He emphasized that the company doesn’t use tools for the sake of using them, but because they understand how to make them “move the business forward.”
Prior to MarketChorus, Sommer was VP of R&D and co-founder of Engenium, where he led the creation of the concept search engine. Sommer also served as a senior research scientist at Avalon Data Systems and Raytheon, where he worked as an AI researcher and engineer developing neural network-based speech and language classifiers for high-order digital signal processing applications.
Sommer has obtained 10 US invention patents, covering areas such as text analysis, information retrieval, sentiment analysis, document clustering, audience analysis and advertising positioning.
Imaginuity said that more than 30% of its employees are dedicated to technical positions, and the company is looking for ways to make marketing smarter through data and technology.
