Google LLC’s cloud team today announced the release of a new secure infrastructure and data processing solution called Isolator that enhances the protection of healthcare data and allows trusted collaboration between parties.
Taylor Lehmann, director of the CISO Office and Enterprise Health and Security Officer at Google Cloud, said in an interview with SiliconANGLE that one of the biggest issues faced by users in the healthcare industry is the handling of regulated information, such as protected healthcare information, or PHI. The same is true for any other highly regulated industry, such as banking, as well as social security numbers, financial information, or any sensitive data.
The problem becomes even more acute when data needs to be shared with third parties for storage, analysis, or to build the next potentially life-saving machine learning algorithm. Patient healthcare data is sacrosanct when it comes to privacy, so organizations need to avoid exposing it to potential leaks or malicious exploitation.
“Sharing information with third parties comes with its own set of risks, including Google,” Lehmann said. “We have a lot of people here who have extremely deep experience in innovating and building transformer models and the foundations of modern artificial intelligence. There are a lot of companies. Want to share data with us so we can help them build new and interesting AI algorithms.”

Under the hood, an Isolator is an environment built using BeyondCorpEnterpriseGoogle’s zero trust technology is combined with other capabilities provided by Google Cloud, including VPC service control and Chrome Enterprise. It also uses encryption at rest, in use and in transit. The system can also provide an audit trail of fine-grained identity-based access to anyone using the data, so that if anything happens to the data at any time, it can be traced back to the person who manipulated it.
Isolator can also be used with more powerful confidentiality computing functions, such as confidential spacewhich supports data encryption through direct hardware isolation and remote authentication for better control.
“Organizations don’t necessarily need to move data anymore,” Lehman explained. “They can leave it in place, type-protect it to ensure that basically nothing really bad happens, while doing it in a highly collaborative way. In Google’s case, it’s helping us accelerate the company Build machine learning models and take advantage of this new technology without taking on all the security risks.”
Lehmann said using Isolator presents an opportunity for researchers currently beset by privacy and regulatory concerns who don’t want to give up their data because it’s too sensitive to move.
The new Isolator solution is available through Google Cloud’s consulting services. Customers can use Isolator to set up isolated instances in their IT environments to handle sensitive healthcare data.
The solution can also be used to securely develop custom models using Google Cloud machine learning platform Vertex AI to individually train, deploy and customize AI and machine learning models and AI applications.It works with Google Multi-omics suite Simplify drug discovery for clinical trials or expand analytical data processing with Big query.
