DTU B357, Creative Commons. The test center reinforces the university’s leading position in electromagnetic systems research and is home to students and researchers from DTU’s Institute of Electronics. The building houses research facilities including radio-silent laboratories, conference facilities and classrooms. The facility houses a large educational laboratory and ancillary research areas. Here, the architecture aims to promote an interdisciplinary research environment among researchers, businesses and students. The building’s architectural style elaborates on the campus’ existing built environment.
Cooperative Research Center. We prioritize a high degree of flexibility. The building’s testing areas are designed to have clear visual connections to the research areas. In addition, the expansion of available research facilities for high-precision testing of microwave technologies makes the radio-silent laboratory available to more students, external partners, and researchers (such as NASA, ESA, and Boeing). This opens up new areas for internal research programs and teaching purposes, as well as measurement programs in collaboration with external partners.
Gold classification. Testing the center’s ambitions for sustainability. To achieve these goals, we use the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as tools to identify sustainable solutions. To ensure this result and document the value created, the test center is certified Gold Level within the DGNB system. Additionally, the building concept was designed to meet a number of specific requirements for the structural performance of the building. This includes cosmetic modifications, adjustments to the laboratory temperature and a vibration-free foundation, all of which ensure the accuracy of the research results.
Multifunctional interior. The furniture was developed to meet the client’s desire to have furniture that students could gather around, as well as furniture that encouraged students to stay on campus to complete assignments and hang out with other students. To provide these facilities we designed lounge furniture and café interior furniture with high tables. Since students’ work is primarily done digitally, lounge furniture has built-in plugs so students can easily charge their computers and cell phones. B357 is located opposite the canteen, providing a convenient student environment for all users of the DTU campus.
Cutting edge research facilities. The building is an extension of the existing DTU ETC and consists of a large testing hall with four testing rooms, a classroom and a learning environment. These test chambers serve a variety of testing needs, including stargate antenna testing, millimeter wave antenna testing, millimeter wave component and circuit testing, and general testing.
The requirements and demand for test centers are extremely high. For example, the indoor temperature is maintained at exactly 22.0 degrees Celsius year-round with a tolerance of +/- 1.0 degrees Celsius, while the humidity level is maintained at 50% with a tolerance of +/- 10%. The building’s design prioritizes a sealed environment to prevent external factors from causing vibrations within the research space, ensuring optimal testing conditions.
