HR experts at top companies reveal the details that lead them to instantly reject a candidate – and it goes deeper than a spelling mistake on a resume.
Several recruiters came together on Reddit to list bizarre interview experiences they’d had, including candidates who actively used artificial intelligence like ChaatGPT to answer questions.
Others pointed to poor hygiene, noticeable body odor and bragging about nights out drinking, among other undesirable traits.
Recruiters also reject candidates who bring their parents to interviews because it suggests a lack of independence.
It has also previously been found that a third of recruiters rejected candidates after looking at their social media profiles, despite pushback against this practice.
One of them shared a “wild” experience with someone using artificial intelligence.
“I did a video interview with a woman who, after asking a few questions, indicated with obvious distress that she just typed the questions into ChatGPT and read back the answers,” he said.
“Her response was a rambling essay that defined the key words in the question rather than answering it. I asked her what her proudest achievement was and she said “Some things people often feel a sense of accomplishment include…”
“This tells me that she either knows nothing about the position or lacks confidence in her skills to the point where she needs to be constantly shadowed rather than ultimately able to work independently. Both are an immediate no.”
In addition to not using artificial intelligence to answer questions, proper etiquette during Zoom interviews is also important.
“My boss once asked someone to do a Zoom interview with no shirt on. If you’re the type of person who’s going to be interviewed shirtless, how on earth are you supposed to live your life? one man asked.
Others say strong odors — whether positive or negative — also influence their hiring decisions.
“If you stink across the table, I’ll say ‘no’ immediately,” one said.
“One woman smelled of extremely strong rose perfume. When you get within five feet of her, it hits like a ton of bricks. I couldn’t focus on the interview,” another shared.
But one boss revealed something that made her turn down an intern.
“The young intern candidate came in, not realizing there was a desk behind the low wall, and one of us listened to how much he had been partying, doing drugs and drinking all weekend, and pretending to be sick from get off work,” she said.
Another person shared that a candidate pulled a flask out of his briefcase during the interview and took a long swig.
A recruiter said, “Any level of parent participation in the interview, especially parents who bring parents to the interview, is a no-no.” “Parents calling to schedule or reschedule the interview? Passed. Bringing parents to the interview? Passed immediately .
Several others shared relatively standard reasons for rejecting candidates, such as empty resumes, not meeting minimum requirements, not having work rights, or requiring visa sponsorship.
