The Association of British Professional Conference Organizers (ABPCO), the UK’s only professional body for association conferences and not-for-profit event organizers, has published the results of its first Impact Survey, showing that 57% of ABPCO members have an event portfolio that generates turnover Over £1 million.
With a response rate of over 50%, the survey helps capture the collective voice of ABPCO members’ activities throughout 2023 and provides insights into trends for 2024.
Key highlights from the ABPCO Impact Survey include:
- Economic contribution: ABPCO members make a significant contribution to the UK’s growth agenda, with 85% having a turnover of over £500,000. Their activities support a wide range of technology employment opportunities and significant investment in supply chains.
- Exhibitions and sponsorships: In 2023, members purchased £23.2 million of exhibition space and secured £43.2 million in sponsorship, increasing the professionalism and impact of events.
- Activity participation: ABPCO members organized 3,280 events in 2023, attracting 610,000 attendees, 82% of which were held in person, demonstrating the importance of events and their ability to engage audiences across multiple sectors.
- Industrial impact: The organization’s activities span key areas such as health sciences and medical technology (34%); science, engineering and manufacturing (20%); professional services, finance and technology (17%); and government (14%), reflecting the diversity of ABPCO members. Diversification and strategic focus.
- Domestic and International Reach: ABPCO members hosted 318 national conferences with over 500 attendees, 346 inbound international conferences and submitted 158 international conference bids, enhancing the global reach and connectivity of the UK association events industry.
- Looking ahead to 2024: With 2,360 confirmed event bookings and over 6,800 provisional bookings, ABPCO members are well positioned for continued growth and success, demonstrating confidence in the industry and its ability to foster cross-industry connections.

Forty-nine ABPCO internal and agency PCO members responded to the impact survey. Only one answer per organization will be submitted. This represents 50% of ABPCO’s member organizations. The final numbers were extrapolated from these data.
