A new study from Paychex, Inc. reveals the benefits and challenges of artificial intelligence in the HR industry, and how HR professionals and employees view its use and effectiveness differently.
The first in a new series of HR Pulse Reports 2024 titled “Balancing Technology and Touch in HR,” found that 41% of employees surveyed prefer less involvement of artificial intelligence in company HR processes, while More than half are satisfied with the current situation (39%) or with improvements in artificial intelligence (20%). Among HR professionals surveyed, 85% said AI provides useful data and analytics, and 79% believe AI helps reduce bias.
Improve efficiency
A survey of 325 HR professionals and 1,017 employees in organizations with 20 or more employees found that HR professionals using AI saved nearly a full workday (7.5 hours) per week, with More than half (56%) say it has sped up employee recruitment and screening. In addition, the human resources professionals interviewed said that the three most transformative functions of artificial intelligence are:
- Analysis and data management (58%)
- Talent acquisition (46%)
- Onboarding/offboarding process (43%)
“Our survey found that more than half (56%) of HR professionals are currently using artificial intelligence in their role, and I expect this number to increase over time. “It’s clear that there’s still a lot of work to be done before we can achieve an effective balance between HR and employees in terms of AI,” Stevens added. “Transparency and maintaining a balance of human interactions will be key. At Paychex, our HR business partners act as advisors to clients, helping them better understand and interpret data-driven insights, personalized for individual company and employee situations. responses and provide information on regulations that may affect their organization.”
HR and Employee Perspectives
Most HR professionals surveyed use artificial intelligence in some capacity, but only 11% of employees said the process is transparent. Nearly half (41%) of employees surveyed prefer less artificial intelligence involvement in human resources decisions, with 39% saying the current level of participation is appropriate and 20% favoring more artificial intelligence involvement. The top HR function that employees surveyed believe should be people-focused is conflict resolution and employee relations (78%), followed closely by sensitive issues such as layoffs or disciplinary action (76%).
Additionally, nearly a quarter of HR professionals expect artificial intelligence to be part of their function within the next five years. The majority (71%) of employees surveyed are dissatisfied with AI-led HR departments, and 46% would consider leaving the company if AI replaced human-led HR teams.
