Construction has officially begun at 525 East Charleston Road in Palo Alto, Santa Clara County. The development, called Mitchell Park Place, is a joint partnership between Eden Housing and the city, county and support services provider TalentPath. When completed, the project will bring 50 new apartments and a nonprofit office space.

The 49-foot-tall building will occupy 45,360 square feet, with 27,950 square feet for housing, 14,660 square feet for resident common areas and support facilities, and 2,750 square feet for offices leased to AbilityPath. On-site facilities include a community lounge with kitchen, support and meeting rooms, Eden offices, library and technology lounge, lounge and fitness center.
Of the 50 units, there will be 39 studios, 6 one-bedrooms and 5 two-bedrooms. One of the two-bedroom units will be available as a manager’s unit. All 49 affordable units will be provided to households earning approximately 80 percent of the area median income. Half of the units will be deed-restricted to provide housing for residents with special needs. Parking spaces can accommodate 20 cars and 57 bicycles.
Architects Fora is responsible for the design. The studio said they were inspired by “an aesthetic that reflects the project’s surrounding Eichler neighborhood, which is characterized by clean, orthogonal and angular lines.” Façade materials will include vertically fluted wood panels, cement plaster and curtain walling to Visually break up the volume.
The L-shaped project will embrace a landscaped central courtyard and be decorated with seating and drought-tolerant plantings. The courtyard faces a multi-use path connecting pedestrians and cyclists to nearby Mitchell Park. BASE Landscape Architecture is responsible for the design. CBG is providing civil engineering consultancy services.
The 0.78-acre parcel is located near East Charleston Road and Middlefield Road. Residents will be close to several public and private schools, a public library and shops.
