Gen Z struggling to find work after university are being told to lower their expectations, however young Australians say this is next to impossible amid a cost of living crisis.
Many graduates are applying for roles that are much more senior than their experience and job seekers are not ready to move up, a recruitment expert says.
Ursula Colman, Director of Recruitment at Zetter Recruitment, explains how Gen Z has unrealistic expectations about their salary or the time they need to spend in the office.

“[There’s an attitude] You deserve to get the life you want and get paid for it,” Coleman told mail online. This makes internships seem unfashionable.
“The amount people are willing to work has definitely changed. Too often we are in entry-level positions and Gen Z is like, ‘No, this doesn’t pay enough, I’m looking for more.'”
“We are seeing more and more Gen Z looking to work from home, and historically the first roles in a career are those that require commuting and long hours.”
Coleman said that while getting a college degree is great, it’s now considered the bare minimum. She said experience is now highly sought after because it sets you apart from other candidates. However, she added that many Gen Zers want to travel, which creates huge holes in their resumes and makes them unattractive to future employers.
Graduates say entry-level jobs don’t pay enough
However, recent graduates have revealed that they cannot live on their graduate salaries as inflation makes their lives difficult.
Kaitlyn Hill has been working as a casual worker at Coles while she looks for “any full-time job” in Adelaide. She said that despite having a double degree, the salary was not enough to live on.
“I looked at the salary and it was indeed $60,000. $60,000 in living expenses? Sorry?” she explained to me. Yahoo Finance. “Is it unrealistic that I would expect at least $75,000 for entry level?”
Maddy Basham received a marketing coordinator position that paid $50,000 and required two years of experience and a college degree.

The young Australian worker said it was far less than what she earned as a retail manager and not enough to cover her rent, bills and groceries.
Not only that, if she accepts the job, her HECS debt will continue to be indexed because her income will be below the $51,550 threshold.
“[I’m] Tired of seeing the same job ads over and over again, asking for educated, experienced marketers but not paying them anything,” said the Brisbane job seeker.
“At this point, I’m very close to getting back into retail just to make a living wage.”
According to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australia’s median salary is $54,890. This is calculated by looking at the median of all incomes (rather than the average), as high earners can skew the average. As of November 2023, the average salary in Australia before tax and HECS deductions is $98,217.60 per year.

Employers are more picky about recruitment
Shakira Coldwell, who lives on the Gold Coast, said she had applied for more than 100 jobs but still couldn’t find full-time employment.
She worried that if she couldn’t find a job in the industry she’d been studying for several years, she’d have wasted her time in college.
Graham Wynn, founder and director of Superior People Recruitment said Yahoo Finance The current job market is brutal.
“I’ve been running this company for 15 years and I never knew [much of a] A challenging time to find job candidates. We have many more job opportunities than job seekers,” Wynn said.
“The problem is that it’s so hard to find people and employers are more picky than they used to be because they know they can’t make mistakes like this because if they invest time and money and it doesn’t work out, it’s going to be too hard to find another person.”
If people have experience, he said, they can “hit the ground running” rather than spending months training.
Tips for getting points for your job
