According to Minister Hari John Akipe, the 2020 structure replaces the previous seven-year-old redundant structure. He said the 2020 structure would enable the department to effectively discharge its legal responsibilities in an ever-changing security environment.
“It will also provide an essential platform for the Papua New Guinea Defense Force to transition from functional to environmental command. All structural activities since 2020 have been completed in consultation with the Department of Personnel Management (DPM). This ensures public service Laws and requirements are followed.”
In 2021, a recruitment campaign was launched to fill positions resulting from the reorganization. A total of 166 internal staff have been appointed to roles in the country’s defense establishment, with 48 new staff joining the department through external recruitment at the end of 2021.
After the initial recruitment is completed, the department places and confirms the new personnel as employees of the department through the public service process. Following the settlement, the department advertised again in July 2023 to fill the remaining positions. The campaign was completed in February this year, with offers issued to 77 successful applicants. One out of 77 applications declined the invitation to work with the department, and 76 applicants are expected to start work by the middle of this month.
All recruitment activities are conducted under the guidance of the DPM, whose representatives are also members of the technical interview panel.
