March 16, 2023 – Chiavalon and Damir Vanđelić shine at Italy’s Premio il Magnifico trade show, as Istrian olive oil stars achieve more international success.
This is one of my favorite stories from my 22 years in Croatia, a story that adds more impressive chapters every year.
It all started when a 13-year-old boy decided to start taking care of some of his grandfather’s olive trees. When I first met Sandi and Tedi Chiavalon in 2017 (you can read about it in Chiavalon in Istria: Making olive oil from the best products in the world), they were still working in Vodnjan In the old factory, approximately 17,000 liters of high-quality olive oil are produced every year. Two of the nicest people I’ve met here.

Last night, Premio Il Magnifico in Tuscany revealed the best extra virgin olive oil in Europe and we won the “Best Oil Hospitality 2024” award at the European Oil Tourism Awards.
After two years ago in the same competition we won the Olive Oscar “Il Magnifico” for the best olive growing company, last year we won the “Best of the North Adriatic” award and ranked among the 3rd place in the competition Among the finalists, this award left us breathless, to put it mildly.
In 2008 we established the first olive oil tasting room in Istria, when we did not even know the potential of olive oil tourism.
We believe in providing our guests at our destinations with the best possible experience in order to connect them with us and the destination for the long term. We encourage our colleagues to move in this direction and our vision is that Istria must become the best olive growing destination in the world. In 2020, we built a new oil pressing plant, a kind of olive growing center, where we further improved the level of service we offer and developed a series of events and tasting education programmes. Today, in Wardian in Istria, we have dozens of wonderful tasting rooms run by hard-working olive growing families.
This award means many things to us.
This is a reward for all the years of hard work we have done as a family.
This is a reward for all our hard-working employees who have embraced our philosophy and fully integrated themselves into each of our products and every service we provide at our oil mill. Without them, none of this would be possible.
This is a reward for all the hard-working olive growers who tell the story of olive oil from Istria every day in the tasting room and who tirelessly educate tens of thousands of guests on how to create honest, natural, pure olive oil.
Finally, it is a reward for Istria and all its people, who over the past two decades have transformed this beautiful region into one of the most desirable places in the world.

I would like to thank the whole team at OPG, especially Patrik Giachin, the manager responsible for the plantations and oil mills, for another extraordinary success at the Premio il Magnifico in Florence.
Our olive oil achieved excellent results and won the award for Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil in the category “Il Magnifico 2024 Best Mediterranean Oriental”.
Our dear oil sommelier and tasting manager Marija Virkes received this award.
This time we are the only oil company from Croatia to be among the top six in Europe. We are not just OPG, we are like a united family and that is why we are together for the long term and that is why we have great results.
