Here’s a peek at the insights shared Angelo S. Macario, Chief Human Resources Officer, National Museum of the Philippines.
Can you take us through a day in your working life?
I start each day by reviewing the outstanding deliverables from the past day and making a to-do list of things to do that day or week (if possible).
How do you think work, the workforce and the workplace have evolved in recent years?
In the public sector setting, I think over the past decade, the Philippine Civil Service Commission has been very committed to improving human resource services through the Program for Institutionalization of Talent Management and Excellence in Human Resources Management (PRIME-HRM), by assisting Empower, measure and reward CHROS.
How has the role of the HR leader evolved over the past three years? Do you agree that they finally have a seat at the table?
Of course, senior executives view me as a partner in organizational decisions, especially in the areas of human resources and organizational development.
How would you define your leadership style?
My leadership style is very consultative and I always ensure collaboration with key stakeholders in the implementation of HR plans through open communication such as FGDs and committee meetings.
If you could change one thing about your leadership, what would it be?
I should start practicing work-life balance, slowing down at work during holidays and weekends, and promote this behavior with other colleagues and colleagues to make it a work culture in our organization.
Tell us about a change initiative you introduced in your organization that had a significant impact on work and the business?
I think one of the best transformation initiatives I launched at the National Museum of the Philippines was the implementation of a competency-based human resources system, which received a Bronze Award from the Philippine Civil Service Commission as a finalist this year through its PRIME HRM Certification Program.
Tell us about a challenge that required you to work extra hard to solve?
This is a difficult question, but what I can say is that if there is dissatisfaction in the organization, I always go the extra mile to mediate and resolve the issue at my level as the Chief Human Resources Officer through coaching and mentoring.
How would you describe your team and team dynamics?
We have very open lines of communication and I treat all HR people as my colleagues and treat them with equal respect. We treat each other equally.
What inspires you to move forward in your work/or career?
What motivates me most is providing quality and endearing HR services to our stakeholders by enabling our employees to perform well and be efficient at work.
What are your hopes for the future of work in Southeast Asia driven by artificial intelligence?
I support and believe that technology plays a very critical role in improving the efficiency of our services. This must be achieved especially in the public sector to minimize long queues for public and social services. Additionally, it will help government workers get away from manual labor and heavy paperwork.
