“The ritual of dining together is so powerful,” says David Rockwell, architect and founder of The Rockwell Group. “Getting together to eat is a very healing thing.” COQODAQ, Rockwell’s recent design for restaurateur Simon Kim, a 190-seat Korean fried chicken restaurant in Manhattan, celebrates this ritual.
Four years in the making, Kim, Executive Chef Seung Kyu Kim and President Dexter Zimet saw COQODAQ as an opportunity to explore a premium experience on the beloved fried food.Menu inspired by ancient Korean philosophy yin and yang: This concept is based on the idea that duality is the basis of natural balance.Gluten-free ingredients and pickled vegetable dishes lighten up the heavier fare, in addition to the usual Chimek Paired with beers, COQODAQ offers an extensive champagne menu—the largest in the country—as reflected in the restaurant’s name, which is a portmanteau of the French and Korean words for “chicken.” Then, its interior design must also adapt to the gorgeous occasion.
