CFOs are credited with managing risk and planning for “what if” moments in organizations. A new study shows they are taking on increasing responsibilities – from environmental, social and governance matters; mergers and acquisitions; to corporate strategy.
Egon Zehnder conducted a survey of nearly 600 chief financial officers around the world titled ” “Super CFO”The study found that 82% of CFOs said their role had grown significantly over the past five years.
The good news, however, is that these additional responsibilities don’t wear out the finance chief. They continue to be energized by the role, with most saying their work-life balance is “okay” (51%) or good (29%). From an industry perspective, CFOs in services reported the best work-life balance, with 41% rating it as “good,” compared to 25% of CFOs in consumer industries.

In addition to the above, six CFOs also shared their personal strategies for finding work-life balance in the report:
1. “Family, sports, a deep hobby in a completely different field (modern art) and last but not least gardening.”
2. “Eat healthy, sleep eight hours a night, limit work dinners and drinks, and stop working entirely during vacation.”
3. “I never play golf, but practice martial arts and go out with my wife on weekends.”
4. “Ride your bike to work, don’t drive.”
5. “I don’t try to achieve a separate work-life balance. I make them blend together seamlessly, and that approach has worked for 25 years.”
6. “Be passionate about what we do so there is no balance; work is part of a good life and like any other life experience it generates energy, passion and memories.”
