The new policy will provide support for all employees in the global consumer business who are suffering from diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke or cancer.
Hamburg-based skin care company Beiersdorf has launched a “Global Critical Illness Policy” to provide comprehensive support to its employees facing life-threatening illnesses. The policy applies to certain standard-defined serious medical illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke or cancer.
Critical illness policies are implemented globally by brand manufacturers such as NIVEA, Eucerin, La Prairie and Hansaplast and include the following provisions for all employees in the global consumer business:
- One-year job security: Employees diagnosed with a critical illness will receive one year of job security to support financial stability during treatment and recovery.
- 100% wage compensation: Affected employees will receive a 100% wage continuation to supplement any existing payments from social insurance schemes or national health systems.
- Global Minimum Standards: All employees within the Global Consumer Business Unit will be entitled to these benefits, regardless of local social security systems.
- The policy extends support beyond diagnosed employees, providing up to 10 days of bereavement leave for employees who have lost a close family member.
- Compassionate Leave for Caregivers: Employees who serve as the primary caregiver of a critically ill immediate family member (e.g. partner, child, parent, sibling) will receive up to 10 additional days of leave in the first year following diagnosis.
- Workplace Accommodation and Reintegration Support: Affected employees will work with their direct managers and HR to develop solutions to make their day-to-day work easier. This may include flexible working arrangements or special office equipment.
- After a long-term absence, a tailor-made reintegration plan will be developed based on the employee’s current abilities and readiness to work.
