German Optical Research Building
The foundation stone for the Optical Research Building of the Interdisciplinary Research Center of Leibniz University Hannover was laid on April 15 at the Science Park in the Marienwerder urban area. HENN’s design won the 2020 tender procedure (VgV) and completion is scheduled for 2026.
Researchers and lecturers from the fields of physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, computer science and chemistry will work together to develop and further advance optical technologies, for example for smartphone cameras, online streaming via fiber optics and 3D medicine Imaging.
Research involving laser beams and high-precision equipment requires a robust and safe environment. To this end, HENN’s design not only employs strong materials; it also takes advantage of the topography of the site: the laboratory is mostly on the ground floor and is mostly integrated into the newly built hill, providing natural protection.
On the east side, the building leads to the main entrance. From here, staff, students and visitors enter Opticum through a spacious lobby designed as a communication hub – a place where everyone in the building meets, promoting professional and social interaction. Full-size windows allow visitors to look into the experimental halls and watch research in progress.
The common areas are located on the first floor in a slightly recessed area. In the meeting rooms, large expanses of glass provide views of the surrounding green surroundings. The upper level houses offices for centralized work and additional laboratory space. At the heart of the new building is a courtyard planted with trees and shrubs that connects all office areas on the second floor and provides opportunities for outdoor working and informal communication.
The building is designed and positioned for future reconstruction and modular expansion. The resulting polygonal shape with rounded corners is surrounded by a highly efficient shell composed of steel, glass and anodized aluminum. The building site is partially hidden in the mountain, opening up through a façade made of mineral material whose fluid form replicates the topography of the rising site. Its surface features warm iridescent tones that blend into the natural surroundings.
Dark facade elements on the first and fourth floors frame a shimmering red curtain wall on the middle floors, whose warm tones correspond to the facades on the building’s ground floor. Its simple structure is complemented by staggered vertical solar-controlled louvers, creating a playful rhythm. Inspired by the constant movement of nature, they are installed at different angles. A rooftop photovoltaic system provides power for energy-intensive research conducted within the building.
Opticum creates space for innovation and collaboration in highly specialized interdisciplinary research areas. It will become an important part of an international research network to develop and improve key technologies for the digital world of the future.
Marcus Fissan, partner at the HENN architecture firm responsible for the project, explains: “Within these 4,000 square meters, spaces are being created that are crucial for research, exchange and communication, and that are innovative Fundamentals. This innovation is important to all of us.
