Every day, evolving technologies help collect, store and process information to achieve goals. This will lead to a better, smarter Queen City, but what really makes a city smart is its people.
While technology benefits communities by making processes, operations, and policies more efficient and effective, collaborative engagement within communities shapes the best technologies.
Technology created through community engagement can build trust, foster innovation and create more sustainable spaces for all of us.
Council’s smart city goals:
- Improve communication
- Build accountability and trust
- Narrowing the digital gap
To achieve these goals, residents and community partners developed five key strategies that lay the foundation for a broader partnership on resident-centered technology and data solutions.
The tactics are:
- Define needs and provide services
Communities that will be impacted by greater technology or digital investments will see tangible, short-term, positive results. - Discover and enhance the strengths and roles of others
The ecosystem around the community is adaptable to change and able to support community, technology and digital investments over the long term. - Focus on communication, outreach and engagement
Communities that will be impacted by greater technology or digital investments both understand the work and feel that the professional project team respects their processes, preferences, time, energy, and expertise. - Create opportunities for expanded co-creation
Communities affected by the investment have the tools, data, relationships and experience to create their own innovative and collaborative projects. - Make participation a real choice
Communities and individual residents can clearly and easily opt out of proposed technologies that are not right for them.
These strategies guided the development of a co-created smart city playbook and will drive the implementation process.
