In a groundbreaking initiative, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) Unveiled the world’s first design green Hydrogenation infrastructure for the recreational boating industry.The ambitious program will be launched at 25 terminals and ports across the country Italy, revolutionizing the way ships are powered and demonstrating a commitment to the sustainable development of ocean transportation. The green hydrogen infrastructure is led by NatPower H, a subsidiary of the NatPower Group, with an investment of €100 million. The project is scheduled to start installation in the summer of 2024, with the goal of establishing 100 filling stations in the Mediterranean over the next six years. The move is in line with global expansion plans to meet the growing demand for sustainable energy from recreational boating.

Green hydrogen production using renewable energy
Each station designed by Zaha Hadid Architects integrates wind, solar and other renewable energy sources to produce green hydrogen, a stable and environmentally friendly resource. The infrastructure leverages NatPower H technology to meet the growing global demand for sustainable energy solutions. By emitting only water vapor and warm air, the electricity produced by the hydrogen in the fuel cell helps create a cleaner environment. The 100 filling stations are expected to be operational by 2030 and are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cruise ships in the Mediterranean by approximately 45,000 tons per year.

NatPower H worked with Zaha Hadid Architects to build a green hydrogen fueling solution based on three key principles: safety, scalability and sustainability. The stations will offer PED-certified low-pressure metal hydride technology tailored for marine applications, ensuring compactness, safety and resilience in compliance with industry regulations. Additionally, a keen focus on circularity and marine ecosystem protection highlights NatPower H’s commitment to responsible and sustainable energy solutions.
Innovative solutions aimed at reducing ecological impact meet the shipping industry’s growing demand for sustainable ships. Marine protected areas around the world now restrict the use of diesel engines, underscoring the urgency of ecological sustainability. However, the transition to green energy is hampered by a lack of infrastructure for zero-impact energy distribution and refueling.

NatPower H is working with Zaha Hadid Architects to build green hydrogen refueling stations that are ecologically responsible and adhere to the highest safety standards. Leveraging ZHA’s expertise in modular systems, the design can be adapted to different locations across the Mediterranean. This adaptability allows for bespoke configurations for each refueling station, meeting specific local needs such as size, seating, bicycle charging facilities and pedestrian circulation within ports and terminals.
Through the use of 3D robotic material placement, the station is constructed from fully recyclable dry-build masonry, minimizing construction waste while increasing material efficiency. The design is inspired by nature, echoing the striped structures and fluid geometries found in Mediterranean landscapes and marine ecosystems. ZHA’s research into modular systems, computational design and 3D printing resulted in a circular structure that reduces structural material by up to 50% without compromising performance.
