Text description provided by the architect. The Aceleradora at Madrid’s La Paz Hospital is the first in a series of pavilions promoted by the Unoentrecienmil Foundation. This is part of a research project aimed at speeding up the cure for childhood cancer through physical exercise. The pavilion is located on the roof of the hospital and is accessible through the tower’s windows. It is an outdoor space, but at the same time represents a new indoor space, integrating technology and imagination in favor of restoration. Inpatients are temporarily freed from the rigid time and space regulations of the main building.
The accelerator consists of a series of spaces. Each has slightly different qualities, but together they form a unique space. The connection to the hospital tower is resolved through an internal wooden ramp that overcomes the elevation of three sections and leads to the waiting pavilion. The next two spaces are dedicated to physical training; the first is used for informal exercise and socializing, and the second is larger, lit by three skylights, for exercising under the supervision of a therapist. Next, the research laboratory works to collect and measure data generated by the activities performed by the unit. The final space in this sequence is a covered outdoor terrace that protects the laboratory from the sun during the summer and houses a small garden of native species. Vegetation, as well as the use of wood as interior decoration, contribute to the well-being of the occupants and create a peaceful and exciting atmosphere.
The future need to implement these research spaces in different hospitals leads to the understanding of the project as a combined system. Using a catalog of units with different interior and exterior finishes, as well as light control equipment and other “plug-ins,” each project is treated as a selection and combination of pre-designed units. Each accelerator will therefore be part of a common family of solutions, adapted to local needs in each case. Based on this concept, an industrialized and modular construction system was proposed. This also allows construction to be mainly carried out off-site, avoiding the inconvenience caused to hospital operations by delays in construction projects. The form of the pavilion clearly communicates its modular and modular nature to the outside. The volume formed by geometric fragments deliberately contrasts with the surrounding environment, presenting a friendly and optimistic space.
