Text description provided by the architect. Tanghua Architects has designed a conference center in the form of a covered bridge, surrounded by picturesque landscapes. With its unique design and response to the genius locus, this program stood out from many programs in the international competition and has been successfully implemented. The conference center serves as a venue for government affairs and business activities related to the “One Belt, One Road” and “Yangtze River Delta Integration Planning”. Not only that, it also symbolizes national culture and serves as a bridge between Ningbo and the world. The conference center is located in Dongqian Lake Scenic Area in the southeastern suburbs of Ningbo City. The core plot is adjacent to the west bank of Dongqian Lake and connected to the north and south mountains, covering an area of approximately 49 hectares (735 acres). Here is the intersection of streams, rivers, lakes, mountains, lotus ponds, water outlets and river banks, with vast rice fields and wetlands stretching for thousands of square meters.
Ecological protection and environmental friendliness. We retained the existing topography, water system and ecosystem of the site, and arranged the conference center above the north and south strips. The compact layout of the building ensures the preservation of 36.7 hectares of agricultural landscape, reflecting the romantic preservation of agricultural landscape in the era of rapid urban expansion. On the one hand, this can flexibly reserve land for potential future urban development; on the other hand, existing agricultural land becomes an ecologically continuous transition zone, which is conducive to “city-field symbiosis.”
Plan and scale. The covered bridge is divided into four areas and three water outlets. The functions are arranged from north to south according to the logic of public and private integration. The northern layout is a large multi-functional hall of 11,000 square meters, followed by a main venue of 5,500 square meters, a banquet hall of 3,700 square meters, and a summit area of 1,800 square meters. The southern part is a five-star hotel with 342 rooms. The three water outlets naturally become landscape nodes between functional volumes and open spaces. Small-scale streets and commercial settlements connected to the conference center are arranged along the water, and together with villages, markets, and temples, they form a multi-dimensional urban scene, like a picturesque Jiangnan scroll.
cycle. The main building volume is raised to 5m high, and the main structure, equipment and service functions are encapsulated in the 5m high volume. The conference floor is 10 meters from the venue floor. Taking advantage of the height difference between the north and south of the site, the conference center can connect urban roads of different heights to achieve three-dimensional traffic. When holding a meeting, participants enter the conference center from the upper level and exit from the lower level, and the service flow line and freight flow line are organized separately. Multiple exits are connected to the city’s public transportation network to ensure smooth gathering and evacuation of people. When the conference venue is closed, the covered bridge and commercial street are open to the public around the clock, transforming into the iconic market and settlement of Jiangnan Water Town. A covered bridge is not just a simple bridge, but a building in the form of a bridge. It is a multifunctional public open space that not only provides protection from the sun and rain, but also a place for people to rest, communicate, gather, and enjoy the scenery. This unique structure also helps create an educational center that incorporates elements of local culture, history and science.
Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency. Attention to environmental protection, energy efficiency and emission reduction are integrated into individual buildings and urban infrastructure networks. The project is located next to the Gaoqiu Weir and is an important flood diversion and storage area for the Dongqian Lake flood control system. In order to minimize the impact on the local hydrological environment, the design team conceived a suspension bridge-like building towering over the fields. In this way, Dongqian Lake can be observed up close without changing the inherent properties of Gaoqiu Weir. In order to reduce rainwater runoff and water pollution, green roofs are adopted, while permeable paving materials are used to retain large areas of green space and increase water penetration and recharge.
In addition, on-site renewable photovoltaic energy is used to provide hot water, and a geothermal heat exchange system is adopted to enhance energy conservation and save space resources. Tracing back to the cultural origin of Ningbo City, agriculture can be said to be the root of Hemudu culture. Our design retains the natural wetlands within the site, juxtaposes high-density, fast-paced urbanization areas with idyllic natural spaces, and integrates the cultural tourism industry system with the convention and exhibition industry system. It is the juncture of regional culture and modern cities. It is a contemporary Jiangnan water town where rivers and lakes meet, agriculture and commerce are combined. It is also a model of Ningbo people’s yearning for a better life.
