“In the last six or seven years, more than 50 percent of women have joined our graduate programs. Even in our technical areas, we have had success,” McCreery said.
Mid-sized consultancy BDO recruits graduates across all its service areas, from audit and assurance to consulting, business services and tax.
Opportunities are available for graduates from a variety of disciplines. Accounting graduates in particular can join risk and people advisory, business restructuring, forensics, financial management advisory, audit and other teams, as well as the private wealth team in the Perth office.
“Everyone in our organization understands the importance of developing early-career talent to the future of the organization and our clients,” said Kerry Atkinson, BDO’s director of people and culture.

Atkinson said graduates now seek “more than just pay” from graduate programs. “Many graduates want learning and development opportunities, as well as an inclusive culture where people understand they have professional and personal lives.”
She also pointed out that graduates can join BDO on a long-term basis. For example, current managing partner of BDO’s Brisbane office, Steven Sorbello, joined the firm as a graduate.
“We’re very proud of the solid tenure and diverse careers you can have here,” she said. “You can start at BDO and have a long, successful career in the industry.”
Deloitte’s McCreary agrees that career development and learning opportunities are top of mind for many professional services graduates.
“They want to join an organization where they can learn from others and do purposeful work,” she said.
“I think things may have changed a little bit. They’re not just thinking about their jobs, but what they can contribute to society, their communities, their customers? That’s important to them.”
McCreery also highlighted Deloitte’s support for resilience.
“Our employees can choose when to work virtually and when to work in person based on their clients, their teams and their needs. This is a very important part of our EVP [employee value proposition]”.
Deloitte runs a company-wide induction program and trains graduates in job-related skills, including presentation, communication, problem solving, business acumen, business writing and innovation. Graduates also meet with clients regularly.
“The first few months are really about quickly producing graduates and getting them ready for clients and jobs,” McCreary said.
The transition from college student to young professional “is probably the biggest transition many people will ever go through,” she said. Deloitte’s postgraduate courses are designed with this in mind, providing support and development opportunities for many graduates at a critical time in their lives.
“We don’t underestimate that, so we do provide them with a lot of support,” McCreery said.
BDO expects to employ at least 150 graduates by 2024. Atkinson said the company was increasingly recruiting from a pool of people who had taken part in the undergraduate holiday scheme.
“We are working in an extremely competitive hiring market. We have to be open to bringing in talent from different talent pools,” she said.
She added that BDO is keen to showcase the diversity and career opportunities that come with working at a mid-sized company.
“Graduates from mid-sized organizations have access to partners and managers, and the range of jobs you can do… is quite high.”
Atkinson noted that highly sought-after graduates have a balance of technical skills, emotional intelligence and digital aptitude. When recruiting graduates from traditional service areas, BDO values not only accounting qualifications but also capabilities such as cultural fit and interest in learning.
“We want future advisors to have a well-rounded skill set, the ability to build relationships and ensure best practice outcomes for clients.”
