At Amerigo Vespucci Airport in Florence, Italy, the new international airport terminal will feature a fully operational vineyard on its roof. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, the terminal is expected to handle more than 5.9 million passengers annually. Renderings of the project were recently released.
The 538,195-square-foot terminal project will involve extending the existing runway and relocating it 90 degrees away from nearby hills that restrict the operations of many modern aircraft.
Airport design aims to create a sense of place and improve the passenger experience. In the skylit terminal, arriving and departing flights will face each other across a large central public space, the plaza. The organization will help streamline circulation in and out of the terminal.
In addition, the terminal will provide public transport, parking and retail facilities to serve passengers and the local community. The terminal will be connected to the city and wider region via multimodal transport options, including a new light rail system.
A striking feature of the project is the 19 acres of vineyards above the marina. These include 38 rows of active vineyards located on the building’s pitched roof, helping to achieve a LEED Platinum sustainability rating and representing Italy’s winemaking tradition. The region’s leading grape growers will be responsible for planting the vineyards, and the wine will be vinified and aged in special cellars located under the terminal’s roof.
The airport terminal will be completed in two phases: the first phase is expected to be completed in 2026, and the second phase is expected to be completed in 2035.
