South Korean hydrogen producer Approtium is one step closer to the commissioning of Ulsan hydrogen plant today (19th February) announced the signing of a technology agreement with Topsoe.
Under the terms of the agreement, European emissions reduction technology specialist Topsoe will provide Approtium with its ammonia cracking technology H2RETAKE™ to support the production of 75,000 metric tons of hydrogen per year.
H2RETAKE is designed to efficiently convert ammonia into high-purity hydrogen with an energy efficiency of up to 96%. This technology uses waste gas as fuel for endothermic reactions. It can handle any commercial grade ammonia feed source.
With the signing of the technology contract, the plant is expected to be operational in 2027.

South Korea hopes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% in 2030 compared to 2018.
What makes ammonia such a good zero-carbon fuel candidate?
Since there are no carbon atoms in ammonia molecules, no carbon dioxide (CO2) is emitted when burned. It also has a similar energy density to methanol, which is more favorable than hydrogen. Additionally, it requires less cooling than cryogenic liquid hydrogen, making it more efficient.
Because the gas can be synthesized from zero hydrocarbons using the Haber-Bosch process, ammonia is always cheaper than other zero-emission fuel options such as methanol or e-methane.
Falling renewable energy costs also support the scalability of ammonia as a marine fuel.
Elena Scaltritti, Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, commented: “Significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are needed globally, and with this project Topsoe is making a strong contribution to support South Korea’s decarbonization goals.”
