Artificial intelligence has attracted worldwide attention, but this is not new to the WPI community—the school has been dedicated to teaching, learning, and research related to artificial intelligence for decades. A newly formed team of faculty is now looking at how to invest in computing infrastructure to ensure the university remains at the forefront of artificial intelligence in the coming years.
Part of the WPI Artificial Intelligence Initiative, the Artificial Intelligence Technical Working Group is led by the Chief Information Officer Vijay Mentaresponsible for ensuring that the school’s computing infrastructure can meet growing demands.
“We are a STEM school and have been leading in this field for many years, so the move to AI is a natural progression,” Menta said. “We want to continue to be a leader in this field and prepare for the modern world in this age of artificial intelligence. Provide services to existing and future students, researchers, and faculty.”
This working group focuses on how infrastructure improvements can facilitate the integration of artificial intelligence in three areas: research, teaching, and management. This could mean virtual assistants that help employees transcribe meetings or develop reports, assistive classroom devices, or chatbots that guide potential students through the application process.
“Vijay brings the right knowledge and skills to lead this partnership,” said WPI President Dr. Grace J. Wang. “This working group will work with faculty administration and consult with faculty experts to develop a comprehensive AI technology enhancement strategy that is consistent with WPI’s academic, research, and operational goals. This working group will contribute to our emerging Research, education, and management needs assessment, analysis, and strategic planning with an emphasis on safety and ethical considerations.”
Menta said the university currently has the capacity to meet the various demands on its technology infrastructure, but it is important to plan for the future.For example, students applying for WPI’s new master’s degree you have a schedule There may be additional demand for high-performance computing, he said.
“We are on the cusp of a huge technological revolution,” Menta said. “The AI Technical Working Group is basically saying ‘It’s great that we’re going to have all these tools. But how do we make them work for us, and how do we make them work together?”
As work continues, the Artificial Intelligence Technology Working Group will examine ways to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among WPI’s four schools to ensure seamless integration of AI technologies and maximize the impact of infrastructure investments across all disciplines. The working group’s responsibilities also include focusing on security and privacy, and working with other subcommittees to help develop ethical AI practice guidelines and policies within the WPI community.
