Walmart announced it is reimagining its Live Better U (LBU) education benefit to focus on skills that make employees better qualified to hold key positions within the company. The goal is to help Walmart and Sam’s Club employees quickly find about 100,000 in-demand positions that need to be filled over the next three years.
Job numbers represent positions the company considers critical to customer service, including salaried management and hourly supervisor positions in Walmart stores, clubs and supply chain facilities. Walmart said it will also focus on helping employees develop skills for roles in technology, health and wellness, Walmart’s private truck driver fleet and other growing areas of the business.
LBU programs provide more than 126,000 employees with the opportunity to learn from academic institutions such as the University of Arkansas, Purdue University and Spelman College. The company is removing college degree requirements for many management positions and says its new LBU approach will help emphasize skills-based recruiting.
Walmart will more than double the number of short-term certificates and courses it offers to more than 50 options. These short certificates typically take approximately four months to complete.
“Colleagues told us they wanted shorter options, and for good reason,” Stomski said. “The faster they learn new skills, the faster they can advance,” she added.
Some of the certificates offered include frontline manager leadership, people and business leadership, data science, software development, and project management. Walmart also produces its own certificates, including a supply chain operations course created in partnership with the University of Arkansas.
In January, Walmart announced increases in pay and incentives for its store managers.
