Stetson’s Centurion sales team earned its first-ever national title at the 2023 International Collegiate Sales Competition (the “Sales World Cup”) in Orlando from November 1-4.
Stetson students competed with more than 300 students from 80 universities in the United States, the Netherlands and Canada in three categories: elevator pitches, sales management cases and role plays. Each member of the team set new performance records for the Centurion Sales Program in their respective categories.
The sales volume of the “World Cup Champion” is determined by the total points scored in each event within four days. Stetson students earned the highest overall scores in all events throughout the competition.
Teams Stetson defeated include Florida State, the University of Florida, Florida International University, the University of South Carolina, LSU, Texas A&M and Arizona State.
These achievements are particularly impressive considering that Stetson’s Centurion sales program was launched only seven years ago.
‘As good as it can be! ‘

[Dena] Hale and I cannot begin to express how BIG winning first place at the International Collegiate Sales Competition is and what it means for our students and the program,” commented John Riggs, PhD, founding executive director of the Centurion Sales Program and professor of Practice in Marketing. “Think of it like winning the World Series, Stanley Cup, or Super Bowl. That’s as good as it gets!

The Centurion Sales Program brings a team of students including Cole Caven and Zane DeRienzo (sales management cases), Adam Shulman and Guliano Black (elevator pitches), and Dakota Phillips and team leader Isaac Choate (role playing).
In the Sales Management Case Competition, Stetson made history by making the final 12 teams, a first for the university. In the elevator race (quick sale), Schulman and Black both had extremely strong performances and placed at the top of the competition. Ultimately, Phillips and Choate made it to the wild-card round after their first role play. However, they fought their way back to the semifinals, and Choate made it to the final four.
Choate, a senior double major in investment finance and professional sales, said: “Our outstanding team performance and valuable guidance in all aspects allowed Stetson to win the entire competition, make history and be recognized as the world’s No. One sales item.”
The Centurion sales program was launched in 2017 thanks to the generous support of Stetson alumnus and highly successful entrepreneur Leopoldo Fernandez Pujals, who owns Jazztel and Tele-Pizza, two major businesses in Spain, and led both companies to the Spanish Stock Exchange The index is IBEX 35. In 2019, Fernandez fully funded the program, which is named after his father, Genaro Fernandez Centurion.
