Meet Gabrielle, Senior Franchise Sales Manager 2 on our Franchise Sales Team! Gabrielle’s #FiveStarCareer career began in April 2015. She started as an Account Executive (AE) within our local sales team, progressed to a management position a year later providing guidance to AEs, and then took on the role of Franchise Sales Manager four and a half years ago. Where she has been ever since.
How did you know you wanted to work in sales?
My first real work experience was in high school as a receptionist at a car dealership. My dad bought a new car and asked the sales manager to hire me! It was terrifying to be thrown onto the busy sales floor of a car dealership in Queens, New York, at 16 years old. I never thought I would pursue a career in sales after that experience.
However, after studying journalism at university and working in research after graduation, I overcame my fear of cold calls. Once I was able to overcome this fear, I aspired to a position where I could earn commissions. Yelp was hiring at the time and it was a no-brainer decision for me. As a consumer, I love Yelp, and I’m not afraid to step out of my comfort zone. I also ultimately want to be in control of the money I make.
What advice do you have for someone interested in sales?
My advice to those interested in sales is to stick to your lane and have a strong “why.” If you are constantly comparing yourself to others, it will be difficult to find your footing in sales. As long as you don’t forget your original intention of doing this, you can push yourself every day. Everyone progresses at a different rate, and while others may get the hang of it faster than you, that doesn’t mean you won’t be successful, too. Stay the course, put on blinders, and know exactly what’s at stake for you.
What does a typical day look like for your character?
I manage a team of 12-13 franchise AEs, so I like to start my day by getting everyone on a video call to get ready for the day. Typically, I prepare a training topic or discussion for the meeting, and at the end of each call I have a specific prompt or topic that our team implemented that day and a goal. From that point on, my day was divided between supporting my team and manager training, and interviewing candidates for AE positions twice a week. I balance meetings with representatives for individual coaching sessions and listening to live calls to provide immediate feedback and guidance to my team.
How do you stay motivated to achieve your goals when you’re having a tough day?
When I’m having a rough day, I zoom out and think about my entire week and month. Instead of focusing on what’s not going well right now, I’m going to focus on the behaviors that will lead me to where I want to be. Once I make a short list of two or three things I can fix at that moment, I feel energized again. When I complete these smaller goals or tasks, my confidence grows and I feel more in control of achieving my goals.
